These easy mini Caprese skewers combine fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and basil with a tangy balsamic glaze for a quick, delicious party appetizer that’s simple to assemble and visually appealing.

Ingredients

  • Fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini or ciliegine), drained
  • Cherry or grape tomatoes, washed
  • Fresh basil leaves, whole
  • Balsamic glaze, store-bought or homemade
  • Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Wooden toothpicks or small skewers, about 3 inches long

Instructions

  1. Drain the mozzarella balls by placing them in a fine mesh strainer or on paper towels for about 5 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Rinse the cherry tomatoes and pat dry. If large, cut them in halves. Toss gently with a drizzle of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and freshly ground black pepper in a small bowl (optional).
  3. Assemble the skewers by threading a folded basil leaf onto a toothpick or mini skewer, followed by a mozzarella ball, and finish with a cherry tomato.
  4. Arrange the finished skewers neatly on a serving platter.
  5. Just before serving, drizzle the balsamic glaze over the skewers using a spoon or squeeze bottle.
  6. Optionally, sprinkle flaky sea salt and a light grind of black pepper on top. Drizzle a tiny amount of extra virgin olive oil if desired.
  7. Serve immediately. If preparing ahead, cover and refrigerate the assembled skewers without glaze, adding the glaze right before serving.

Notes

Drain mozzarella well to prevent sogginess. Assemble skewers close to serving time to keep basil fresh and prevent sogginess. Use a light hand when drizzling balsamic glaze to avoid overpowering flavors. Folding basil leaves before skewering helps keep them intact.
