  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold water
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vodka (Smirnoff recommended)
  • 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) blue raspberry flavored gelatin
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold water
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vodka
  • Optional garnishes: fresh berries (blueberries or raspberries), miniature American flags or toothpick flags

Instructions

  1. Make the Red Layer: In a medium bowl, pour 1 cup boiling water over the red gelatin powder. Stir well until completely dissolved (about 2 minutes). Add 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka, stirring gently to combine. Pour evenly into shot glasses or molds, filling them halfway (about 1.5 ounces per shot). Place in the fridge to set for 1.5 to 2 hours until firm but not rock hard.
  2. Prepare the Blue Layer: While the red layer sets, dissolve 1 package blue raspberry gelatin in 1 cup boiling water. Stir until smooth, then add 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka.
  3. Add the Blue Layer: Once the red layer is fully set, slowly and carefully spoon the blue gelatin mixture on top of the red layer, pouring over the back of a spoon to avoid breaking the first layer. Fill each glass or mold to the top (another 1.5 ounces).
  4. Chill Again: Return the layered shots to the refrigerator for at least 2 more hours until the blue layer is firm.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Just before serving, add fresh berries or little flags to each shot. Keep shots refrigerated until serving time.

Notes

Let each gelatin layer set completely before adding the next to avoid mixing colors. Cool gelatin slightly before adding vodka and pouring. Use the spoon pouring method for crisp layers. Adjust vodka-to-water ratio to change alcohol strength. Use clear glassware to showcase layers. For non-alcoholic version, replace vodka with cold water.
