homemade fire cider recipe - featured image

A spicy, tangy immune-boosting tonic made with raw apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger, horseradish, and other powerful ingredients. This traditional remedy is easy to make and helps support your immune system during cold and flu season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
  • ½ cup fresh ginger root, chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh turmeric root, chopped (or 1 tablespoon ground turmeric)
  • ¼ cup horseradish root, chopped
  • 10–12 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño or habanero pepper, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 2–4 tablespoons raw honey (to taste)
  • Optional: fresh rosemary sprig, cinnamon stick, black peppercorns, pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash all produce well. Chop ginger, turmeric, and horseradish into ½-inch pieces. Crush garlic cloves. Slice onion into rough chunks. Slice lemon and jalapeño.
  2. Layer ingredients in a quart-sized mason jar: start with harder roots (ginger, turmeric, horseradish), then add garlic, onion, and pepper. Tuck lemon slices in between. Add any optional add-ins. Pack tightly until jar is about ¾ full.
  3. Slowly pour apple cider vinegar over ingredients until completely submerged, covering by at least an inch. Use a chopstick to release air bubbles.
  4. Screw lid on tightly and shake well to combine.
  5. Store in a cool, dark place (not refrigerator) for 3-4 weeks. Shake gently once a week.
  6. After steeping, strain through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer into a large bowl. Press solids to extract all liquid.
  7. Stir in 2-4 tablespoons raw honey to taste.
  8. Pour finished fire cider into smaller bottles or jars using a funnel. Seal tightly.
  9. Store in refrigerator for up to 6 months.

Notes

Don’t skip the weekly shaking step for best flavor integration. Wear gloves when handling turmeric to avoid staining hands. For a milder version, reduce horseradish to 2 tablespoons and omit jalapeño. For extra heat, add a whole habanero pepper and double the horseradish. Fresh roots are non-negotiable for main ingredients; dried spices work for optional add-ins. Store steeping jar away from heat and direct sunlight. Patience is key—2 weeks minimum, but 4 weeks yields the best flavor.
