A festive and easy-to-make giant sugar cookie cake decorated with gold fondant clock hands, perfect for New Year’s Eve or any celebration. It features a crisp edge and soft, chewy center with a buttery vanilla flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (about 312 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened (170 grams)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (200 grams)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk (30 ml)
  • 1 cup white fondant (ready-to-roll)
  • 1 teaspoon edible gold luster dust
  • 1 teaspoon clear alcohol or lemon extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 10-inch round cake pan with parchment paper, leaving edges overhanging for easy removal.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Using an electric mixer, beat softened butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined; mixture may look slightly curdled.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients in three parts, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.
  6. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan to about ½ inch thickness.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes until edges are golden and center is slightly soft. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  8. Knead the white fondant until smooth, then roll out to about 1/8 inch thickness on a surface dusted with powdered sugar or cornstarch.
  9. Cut out two clock hands (one longer minute hand and one shorter hour hand) using a small knife.
  10. Mix edible gold luster dust with clear alcohol or lemon extract to create a paint. Use a pastry brush to paint both sides of the fondant hands. Let dry for 15-20 minutes.
  11. Once the cookie is cooled, gently place the gold fondant hands on top, positioning them to point just before midnight (11:59). Press lightly to adhere.

Notes

Do not overmix the dough to avoid toughness. Use room temperature ingredients for best texture. Chill dough for 10 minutes if too sticky. Let cookie cool fully before adding fondant to prevent melting. Fondant hands can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored airtight. Adjust milk quantity if using gluten-free flour. For dairy-free, substitute butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
