Quick Mummy Crescent Dogs - featured image

A quick and festive Halloween snack featuring mini hot dogs wrapped in flaky crescent dough with a spicy mustard dipping sauce that adds a tangy kick.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 mini hot dogs or cocktail sausages
  • 1 can (8 oz / 227 g) crescent roll dough, refrigerated
  • ½ cup (50 g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) spicy mustard (Dijon mixed with hot or horseradish mustard)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) honey or maple syrup (optional, for dipping sauce)
  • Butter or oil for greasing the baking sheet
  • Black sesame seeds or tiny edible eyes for mummy eyes (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons (45 ml) prepared spicy mustard (for dipping sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) mayonnaise (for dipping sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) honey or maple syrup (for dipping sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) apple cider vinegar (for dipping sauce)
  • A pinch of smoked paprika or chili powder (for dipping sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat and lightly grease with butter or oil.
  2. Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. Slice the dough into thin strips about ¼ inch (6 mm) wide using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  3. If using cheddar cheese, cut it into small sticks roughly the same length as the mini hot dogs.
  4. Take one mini hot dog and optionally place a cheese stick alongside it. Wrap the crescent dough strips loosely around the hot dog, leaving small gaps to resemble mummy bandages. Avoid wrapping too tightly.
  5. Place each wrapped mummy dog on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
  6. Brush the dough lightly with egg wash for a golden, glossy finish.
  7. Optionally, press two black sesame seeds or edible eyes onto each mummy’s head to create eyes.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the dough is puffed, golden brown, and cooked through.
  9. While baking, prepare the spicy mustard dipping sauce by whisking together spicy mustard, mayonnaise, honey, apple cider vinegar, and smoked paprika in a small bowl until smooth.
  10. Remove the mummies from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving with the dipping sauce.

Notes

Do not wrap the dough too tightly to allow it to puff and crisp. Use egg wash for a golden finish. If dough tears, patch with extra strips. Check oven at 12 minutes to avoid burning. Cool mummies before serving to let cheese set. Prepare dipping sauce while baking to save time. Can be made ahead and baked just before serving. Puff pastry or gluten-free dough can be used as alternatives. Vegetarian sausages can replace hot dogs for a vegetarian version.
